We have approaching 600 yards of fishing on the River Esk, Yorkshire's premier salmon river, approximately half of which is double bank, the rest being single bank.

This was previously a neglected fishery. Since we came here 10 years ago bank clearance work and installation and renovation of stone groins has been undertaken. The river holds sea trout in large numbers, many in double figures, and an increasing return of Esk salmon.

Fly and lure are the only permitted fishing methods - most fish being taken on lures with the opportunities to fly fish increasing but, as yet, limited. The Esk is generally a late river with numbers of fish taken increasing from mid-May onwards.

Other fishing locally
Further fishing on the Esk is available within ten minutes drive at Egton Estates. Day tickets can be booked from the Estate Office. Early booking is advisable.

Still water trout fisheries are accessible within half an hour - e.g. Lockwood Beck.

Sea fishing trips out of Whitby and Staithes - both about 20 minutes away.

Salmon Action Plan
The River Esk is currently in the twelfth year of a salmon action plan. This involves a restocking programme and beck clearance work to redress the current imbalance in salmon and sea trout numbers. Legally caught fish may be kept, however, we do request that you consider returning any salmon caught in the interests of improving the fishing for future generations.
